Poster Research (By Jordan Evans & Olivia Davies)

Firstly the poster must:

  • Raise awareness

  • Advertise the film itself & the genre

  • Attract a certain audience

What film posters have;

  • Film title

  • Main image

  • Tag line

  • Certificate

  • Release Date

  • Actors/ Actresses

  • Directors
  • Producers

  • Website

  • Movie awards

  • Reviews/ Star ratings

  • Production/Distribution/ funds company

Most of these things contribute to a good, eye catching film poster, they also make the poster informative to the audience, giving the audience enough information about the film to make them go and see it. Most of these film posters are mainly aimed at advertisement such as the images, reviews, tag lines and awards making people want to go and see the film.

From film poster research we found out that the colour scheme, layout, size and image of the poster is very important, as it determines the genre of the film. For example;

Horror/ Thriller - use a red and black colour scheme, big images, usually linking also to the genre by means of linking them to the film, like as you can see on the left, there is a screaming face for the 13 ghosts poster and again using the same idea there is a skull in the cabin fever one, although it doesn't stand out as much as the 13 ghosts one, its sort of playing to your subconscious, almost like you know its there but you choose to ignore it.

Comdey - uses bright solid colours on their posters, usually, red and blue.
- funny tag lines.
- big, bold font.
- amusing and over expressed expression on characters.
- relates to real life, so attracts people ( main image)

For some films, they make individual posters for individual characters. This appeals to the audience/ fans of the character to go and watch the film, and perhaps collect the posters.
